TW-400 Installation

On a 2003 Sportster XL Custom

DB00

The Installation description and photographs were submitted by Dennis P. of Portland, OR. 0n 9/25/05, Great bike and thank you Dennis.

1. This is a picture of the bike I installed the TW-400 Security System on. It's a 2003 Sportster XL Custom.

2. First I installed the Control Unit
under the seat. It fit perfectly by turning it on it's side and sticking it to the crossbar at the back of the seat with the mounting tape provided on the unit. There is enough room for the Control Unit and all the connectors and coiled wiring to the other components. I connected the brown wire to an accessory wire in a harness under the seat. Thus eliminating the need to route it up to the ignition switch. On the 2003 Sporty it's an orange/white wire. I connected the pink and gray wires to the white/black wire going to the coil as I was advised by my Harley dealer.

3. Next I installed the Siren by sticking it to the front of the battery case and running the wires up under the seat. Then I coiled the unused length of wire and tied it with a tie wrap and positioned it in the empty space beneath the seat.

4. The Speaker was the next thing I installed. I stuck that to the inside of the frame at the front of the bike just under the ignition switch. Then I ran the wires back to the Control Unit under the seat. I ran the wires along the existing wiring under the gas tank and tied them all together.

5. For the LED I just nestled it between two existing wiring sleeves going up to the handlebar controls and ignition switch and secured it with a tie wrap on either side of it. The reason I installed it this way is because #1, it fit perfectly, and #2, I didn't want to use mounting tape because of the small size of the LED, and the fact that the surface is rounded. I thought it might vibrate off or something and didn't want to take a chance on having a dangling wire while I'm riding. I also didn't want to drill any holes in my frame.
6. I installed the Transmitter Antenna next and simply stuck it to the inside of the frame just behind the seat, between the rear fender and the frame. The antenna extends perfectly without touching any metal, and it's not in a place where it's inconvenient for getting on and off the bike. The cable easily routes to the Control Unit going into the seat compartment. There is a considerable amount of cable to coil, but it fits just fine in the space between the oil tank and under the seat.

7. The Motion Sensor was the last unit to install, and I used the Velcro pad supplied with the kit to put it under the front part of my riders seat. I stuck it to the underside of the seat as I do have a custom seat setup but it should work basically the same with the stock seat. The difference is that my riders seat is hinged to the back of my seat and is very convenient for adjusting the sensitivity on the unit. Also the Velcro comes in handy if I need to remove the whole seat unit for any reason. I specifically didn't mount anything to the underside of my seat so that I could remove the seat without disconnecting any of the wires or cables.

8. Last, I connected the Directional Signal wires by splicing into the corresponding wires in the harness under the seat. Mine were the Brown and Violet wires. I don't know if all or most Sportsters use the same colors, but the 2003 models do
.

9. Next I was ready to test the Alarm. I turned the key to ACC 8 times. On the 8th time the LED lit. I pressed a button on the LCD Transceiver. The siren sounded once, and I was ready to go.

It was a very easy installation, just like it's advertised. It works just like it's advertised, and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to protect their precious possession. Also, on another note. I received it in the mail 2 days after I ordered it because it was shipped Priority Mail so that it would get to me as soon as possible. I didn't ask for this. Internatrix did it on their own. As a result, I would recommend buying from Internatrix anytime for anything.
